It is with great sadness that the family announce the passing of Neville Shave on Saturday 15th August 2026. Neville was incredibly well respected locally and would often be seen walking and chatting around the shops in Farnham Common or down the Farnham Road and certainly at his beloved second home Farnham Royal CC.
Neville grew up in the Farnham’s attending Farnham Royal C of E Combined School and later Slough Grammar. He did his National Service at Portsmouth attaining the role of Corporal and was discharged in 1953. He worked locally at Bestobell and Crane Packing Ltd down the Farnham Road before joining his brother in law Alex at I & A Engineering and then setting up his own company with a former Slough Grammar school buddy, Michael Flynn. Shaflyn Engineers Merchants Ltd as it was called was eventually taken over by a large corporate company B.S.S. where Neville stayed on until his retirement.
Neville’s passion was always for sport. He enjoyed playing football, hockey and cricket. He played many seasons for the Old Paludians Hockey Club in Taplow as well as mixed hockey for Wye Hockey Club in High Wycombe. However it was the cricket that was Neville’s ultimate love. He joined FRCC, his father Joe’s club in 1946 and made his 1ST XI debut aged 17. He became club secretary in 1954 aged 21. Neville left to join Datchet CC in 1958 with his long time friend Trevor Taylor where he spent eight very successful seasons. He returned to FRCC and became club captain in 1970. A new job forced Neville and his family to move to Nottingham, where he joined Radcliffe on Trent CC. Another business venture with his brother in law brought him back and he re-joined FRCC in 1974 as Vice Captain.
In 1990 Neville was appointed the club Chairman, a position he held for 19 years. His older brother Michael was also a prominent player and feature at FRCC. Between them they clocked up many wickets and runs as players and became highly respected within the Farnham’s’ and wider community.
Neville retired from playing in 1992 having sustained a series of injuries, including two knocks to the head and a broken foot. The nurse who attended him on all the occasions, which were on three successive match days, suggested he quit whilst he was ahead. His exploits made the local and national press.
Neville became club President in 2010 a role he has steadfastly enjoyed right up until his passing. He leaves behind his supportive wife Patricia of 65 years, his two sons, Lawrence and Steve, his grandchildren, Joanna, Matt, Chris, Emily and Cameron and his great grandchildren, Freya, Ted and more recently little Freddie.
His funeral is scheduled to take place on Friday 18th September at 2.30PM at Slough Crematorium with the wake back at Farnham Royal Cricket club.
